As an artist and someone who has a tool to communicate and share creativity on a community level it
is really important to me to find and support local business', ideas and energy.
Being relatively new to Asheville myself, I am excited to see others excited about the opportunities that exist here. I just happened to stumble upon an article in the Asheville Laurel that talked about how Melissa and Derek were best friends, really into the PaddleSports and wanting to bring something new to Asheville that was really in need. The article explained how they used River Link to assist with the funding and got a great location
up and running. Just seemed like the kind of energy I like to use to inspire my work. After chatting with Melissa and checking out the space; the body of work just started to come to me.
Originally a beach girl and a surf artist who uses maps in a lot of my work, I was really missing my water inspiration. I
wanted to pull from the movement, flow and energy of the rivers here in
WNC. I wanted to use old, found wood - beat up scraps and make them into doorways that showed the idea of opportunity. Which is what
RiverLink and AAR has extended to the community. I always use lyrics in
my work,
music is a big part of what gives me the vision for my
collections and Natalie Merchants "Where I Go" 100% told the story of
how I felt in regards to where I was going with these artworks.
"Climbing under
A barbed wire fence
By the railroad ties
Climbing over
The old stone wall
I'm bound for the riverside"
10% of my sales from this collection will be donated to RiverLink thru AAR. I couldn't be more excited, more inspired by these local
entrepreneurs and the ability to create a body of work for them, that
tells their story. I decided to title the show "The Opposite of Static"
because it is in movement, forward momentum and energy that positivity is exchanged on this level in sports, art, and music.
